Message from Father Michael Lapsley

24 March 2020

Dear Friends

In 1993 I became the chaplain and one of the first two employees of what was then called The Trauma Center for Victims of Violence and Torture in Cape Town ...
With others we created an experiential workshop called The healing of the memories.
In 1998 we took the program out of the Trauma Center and created an Institute for Healing of Memories and I became the Director
December 31, 2019 will be my last day as Director.
My colleagues Fatima Swartz and Alphonse Niyodusengs and a third to be appointed person will become the new Directors leading the Institute all of whom will have my unwavering support
I will focus on global work and training and financial sustainability.
My heart is filled with gratitude for all that has happened in these last 21 years when I have been at the helm and to every single person with whom I have interacted throughout these years and who have contributed in whatever way to the Institute for Healing of Memories.
Most importantly I rejoice with every single person who has been helped through our work on their own journeys towards healing and wholeness and who are now helping make the world more just and more kind
I ask forgiveness from any whom I may have hurt even inadvertently during these 21 years as the leader
Perhaps not surprising I feel a certain amount of emotionality and vulnerability on this day.
This is in spite of my deep conviction that we are making the right decisions to enable the Institute to flourish and reach new heights even for generations not yet born in the desperately important work of helping to heal the wounds of history.
 With love and solidarity
  Michael SSM

About Us

The Institute for the Healing of Memories seeks to contribute to the healing journey of individuals, communities and nations. Our work is grounded in the belief that we are all in need of healing, because of what we have done, what we have failed to do, and what has been done to us.
