The Institute for the healing of Memories seeks to contribute to the healing journey of individuals, communities and nations. Our work is grounded in the belief that we are all in need of healing because of what we have done, what we have failed to do, and what has been done to us.

Specifically the course aims to:

  • Create an opportunity to explore personal healing and how it relates to wider communities and the history of nations.
  • Provide safe and sacred space to grapple with notions of forgiveness, restorative justice, trauma and community healing.
  • Serve as an introductory course of training for healing of memories facilitators.

Programme include:

Week one

  • Participating in a Healing of Memories workshop – Robben island
  • Exploring ancient, past and recent wounds using the South African context of slavery; colonialism and apartheid, as well as exploring present day challenges of communities wracked by HIV, Drug Abuse and Gangsterism.
  • Visiting sites of individual and collective trauma in Cape Town e.g. District 6 Museum.
  • Dealing with trauma as an individual and as part of a collective.

Week two

  • Healing of Memories pedagogy and praxis with special reference to people living with HIV/AIDS, in prisons and refugees.
  • Engaging with individuals, communities and organisations grappling with notions of forgiveness, restorative justice and reconciliation.

Week three

  • The second phase Healing of Memories workshop, which involves deepening the personal and collective journey to healing.
  • Visiting local communities and exploring models of community healing.
  • Conflict transformation skills and how to deal with anger and hatred.
  • Sharing models of self-care.

Facilitators:

Fr. Michael Lapsley, founding member and Director of the IHOM will be the lead facilitator on the course. IHOM facilitators take a participatory approach, emphasising experiential learning.
